CRITICALITY

MARRIAGE DISCOUNT VOUCHERS

2021

CHALLENGE

CONCEPT

This criticality project asked students to create a graphic approach to critical design. The outcome had to challenge preconceptions and assumptions in society.

Millennials and Gen z are pressured in life to be married by a certain age. From research, women in their 20’s and 30’s within the western world particularly feel the pressure from relatives to be married within that age range. Comments from relatives such as “it’s time to settle down” get thrown around a lot.

Within the real world, getting married has financial benefits, for example, joint ownership of assets. The first vouchers below are discount cards that highlight if you get married between 20-31 years then you will receive benefits as a couple that you wouldn’t if you got married after the age of 31, displayed in the second set of vouchers.

The 25% off your first house vouchers are encountered by a person on their 20th birthday through the post and expire on their 31st birthday. After this you receive no benefits for getting married, which individuals will be notified with through the second voucher reaching them.

The vouchers reinforce how people may end up getting married for these benefits and therefore giving in to the pressure they receive from relatives. However, they do not feel ready to settle down.
