PENGUIN STUDENT DESIGN AWARD

THE UNINHABITABLE EARTH

DAVID WALLACE-WELLS

CHALLENGE

The Penguin Student Design Awards asks students to design a book cover for a fictional, non-fictional or children's book. This year, I chose the non-fiction book: The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells which focuses on the consequences of global warming.

CONCEPT

Within the book, Wallace-Wells mentions what the world could be like by 2050 if nothing changes. For example, By 2050, the global production of fossil fuel-based plastic is expected to triple, and it is possible there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans. Therefore, my idea was to visualise how the world may look through the years within the type. I cut up the type and made it slightly unreadable to reinforce how much the world will have changed by 2050 if people do not change their actions. I chose the background texture due to its worn out look. The cover was made to look eroded, this symbolises how the earth is gradually wearing away due to global warming like Wallace-Wells explains.
